The liver plays vital roles in digestion, metabolism and the elimination of toxins from the body. Our largest organ produces bile to aid in the digestion of fats. Bile also helps eliminate excess cholesterol and toxins.
The liver stores and processes nutrients, including excess carbohydrates (as glycogen). When blood sugar levels drop, sugar is released by the liver to bring levels back up. Your liver also makes cholesterol to transport fats to and from body cells.
The liver is the primary detoxification center, breaking down metabolic waste and environmental toxins so they can be eliminated. As it filters the blood (over a liter of it each minute), the liver removes toxins and microbes from the body before they can damage cells. Chemicals in the body attach to cholesterol and are transported to the liver. Toxins are then eliminated through normal waste-removal channels. A healthy liver can process heavy metals, cleaning solvents, gasoline fumes and toxic household cleaning products. But these can severely tax or overwhelm a dysfunctional liver.
