The Urinary System

The urinary system’s anatomy includes two kidneys, two ureters, the bladder, sphincter muscles and the urethra. The ureters connect the kidneys to the bladder. The bladder then connects to the urethra, which ultimately leads to an opening out of the body. The sphincter muscles are located where the bladder meets the urethra, and either tighten to prevent urine from leaking, or relax to allow urine into the urethra.

The kidneys filter and purify the blood. Think of them as your body’s janitorial staff! Each kidney is composed of approximately one million microscopic filters, called nephrons, which absorb nutrients and then eliminate waste and toxins as blood circulates through the kidneys.

The kidneys also help regulate body fluids— including the amount, pH balance and consistency of these fluids. Healthy cells need the proper concentration of salts and minerals, including potassium and sodium. The kidneys work constantly to maintain this ideal balance.

The urinary system performs a delicate daily balancing act, leveling body fluids and filtering impurities. We can do much to help keep it performing—including sustaining a healthy lifestyle, eating plenty of raw foods, drinking adequate amounts of pure water each day and supplementing with quality products.
